Santa Barbara Writers Conference Perie is honored to have led the morning poetry workshop for this conference for over twenty years. It is held the third week in June each summer at some Santa Barbara location. This conference draws together some of the finest writers as speakers and workshop leaders in all genres, and welcomes students both beginning and experienced. The Santa Barbara Summer Poetry Workshop Each August Perie, Poet Laureate Emerita, leads a three day poetry workshop/retreat (www.sbpoetryworkshop.com) for writing, crafting and discussion of poems in a setting of mutual respect assisted by Barry Spacks, Poet Laureate Emeritus, and David Starkey, current Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara. In 2010 the workshop will be July 31-August 2 at Westmont College in Montecito, California. Carol DeCanio is the organizer. Contact her through email at: [email protected]. Barry Spacks teaches at UCSB, has published ten poetry collections and over 400 individual poems in paper and pixel journals. David Starkey is director of the Creative Writing Department at Santa Barbara City College. He hosts "The Creative Community," an arts-oriented television program, and is the author of textbooks including his latest, Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief, as well as several collections of poetry, most recently Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems, Adventures of the Minor Poet, and Starkey's Book of States. His next book of poems, A Few Things You Should Know About the Weasel, will be published in spring 2010 by the Canadian press Biblioasis.
